Today is a super special treat! My friend Alison Osborn who has the most darling instagram account is here to share some DIY 4th of July Decorations with us! Here she is:
Hi, Alison Osborn here, to celebrate the Red, White and Blue with you. Crafting has been a passion of mine for a long time and I’m so excited to be featured on Love The Day! Today I’d like to share some fun ways to look at holiday wreaths and table décor.Â
I created the embroidery hoops to add patriotic flair to your festivities. These bright and happy designs can be used as centerpieces, mantel décor or star-spangled accents anywhere. The smaller hoops have clothespins on the back side and can be attached to various jars, pots, and other containers.
First I started with several fabrics and 3.5 and 5.5 in. embroidery hoops. I cut fabric squares to size and placed them in each hoop. I trimmed the excess fabric, leaving just enough to attach to the back with hot glue. I then fashioned pinwheels, flowers and stars out of felts and fabrics. Tutorials for pinwheels and handmade flowers are available online.
After hot gluing each item to the center of the hoop, I then used pom-pom trimming as an outer accent. Â To create the trim from felt, I took an inch and a half strip of felt, folded it in half, hot glued the edges and fringed the folded edge. Then I attached it to the back side of the hoop. Â When finished, I hot glued a paper floral stem to the larger hoops and red clothespins to the smaller ones.
For the star, I started with a 36 in square piece of foam core. From that, I traced and cut out a star. I used a ruler to create my star, but you can find star templates online, if you prefer. I then wrapped fabric to the front of the star and used tacks to pin it to the back and a few on the front to keep the fabric taut. I then went crazy making the 65 flowers, my favorite thing to do. I used my Sizzix Bigz Flower Layers #12 die cut and Brenda Walton’s Peony die for the larger crepe paper flowers. I handmade the rest from various felts and papers. I placed the flowers first, then hot glued each onto the star. For a final touch, I made a Stars N Stripes banner to go across the front. Though the star was labor intensive, I think the outcome was well worth it. I hope you agree.
Happy Crafting and Happy July 4th!
