Hi friends, Alli here from Partyography! With the weather as hot as it is in Arizona, we’re always in need of indoor summer craft ideas as a way to entertain the kids. If your family is anything like mine, matching games are always a favorite! Since we play these games at every family gathering, I thought my nieces would have fun making their own DIY photo version.
You never know what response you’re going to get when you present an idea to a three and four year old but the idea of taking photos for their very own matching game was surprisingly exciting for them! You could certainly just use old photos, but taking current photos allowed my nieces to feel more involved in the process.
Materials:
- Photos of your kids
- Photo paper
- Glue
- Cardstock (one sheet for each photo page)
- Scissors
- Laminate (optional)
To start, we had a little photo shoot in their playroom. To make things easy I just used my phone and suggested some hats and various poses. As you can see, the girls came up with their own poses and props, which ended up being my favorite part about this game. *I suggest doing the photos against a lighter background so they print out okay. It seems like the photos print darker on photo paper.
Once I had enough pictures, I uploaded them to my computer and picked out our favorites. You’ll create doubles of every picture so we needed 18 photos to make this thirty-six piece game.
I used Canva to put all the pictures on one page. You could use any program you’re comfortable with. I like the grid feature so I can just drop each photo in and adjust to the size I prefer. Our matching cards are 2 inches by 2 inches but you can make them in any size you like.
Once you have all the pictures you like, you can download the file as a PDF and print onto photo paper.
The final steps are to glue cardstock onto the back of the photo paper and cut out each square.
I also added laminate to these cards so they last longer. This step isn’t necessary but if you want the game to last for awhile, it may be worth it!
I hope you and your little ones enjoy making and playing your very own matching game! If you need more summer ideas, check out this kids summer checklist from Love The Day!
