Another monthly challenge has arrived with the fabulous Michaels Makers program and I am ecstatic to show you what I have come up with. We were asked to create costumes with materials found at Michaels and given a few weeks to conquer the task. I enlisted EVERY possible craft skill I possess to make these Rodeo Queen costumes and I could not be more proud of them. My daughters have wanted to dress up like Rodeo Queens every since we attended the rodeo a few months ago (yes I live in Texas) and I loved the idea of getting to work with leather, glitter and rhinestones. Here is how I made the costume:
CHAPS/SKIRT/VEST
The chaps, skirt and vest were made out of pleather I purchased at a fabric store. I physically laid my girls down on the yards of leather and traced the patterns around their little bodies and cut away, evening as I went along. I then then sewed two inches of white pleather around the patterns and cut to make the fringe. Using my Cricut Explore, I cut out stars and hot glued them to the vest and chaps. Using a piece of white chalk, I drew swirls on the chaps and hot-glued rhinestones I purchased at Michaels. I did the same to around the fringe on the vest and skirt.
HATS
The hats were purchased at Michaels. They are just foam and PERFECT for Halloween. I glued a leather stripe around the base of the hat and hot glued rhinestones to resemble a crown. For a little extra flair, I ran my hot glue gun around the brim and base of the hat and applied glitter while hot. I love the effect and wow-factor it gave the hats!
BELT BUCKLE
The belt buckles were a last minute addition, but I’m SO, SO glad I went for it. They are made out of those wood plaques you find at Michaels in the wood work section. I sprayed the piece of wood with adhesive glue and glittered the tar out of that sucker (my house is a glitter bomb). I them stapled gunned the plaque to leather strips and tied around my girls’ waists for belts. I’m so crazy obsessed with how huge and shiny they are. Almost to the point of ridiculousness, but cute enough to pull off! I love them.
