First off, Happy Memorial Day and thank you to the wonderful men and women who have dedicated their lives for our freedom. We are celebrating around here with time together, homemade ice cream and lots of time outdoors. I am also prepping for my daughter London’s 1st grade graduation party. The room moms and I decided to throw a “Surfing Into 2nd” beach-themed party and I’m in charge of the decorations and party games! I’ve made loads of Hawaiian flowers with my Cricut (post coming soon!) and this Chalkboard Poster with Elmer’s Painters Markers (these things are the bomb) for the entry into the party. It was my first go at Chalkboard Art and boy did I learn a few things. I thought I would share what I learned and I how I created this 20 inch by 30 inch poster.
20′ by 30′ in Elmer’s Chalk Foam Board
Elmer’s Painter’s Markers
Pencil
Ruler or T-Square
Print out your design, draw a grid on the poster-board and a scale version of the same grid on the design.  I used a 4 inch grid on the 20″ X 30″ poster-board.  To determine the correct grid size on the design I multiplied the 4 inch grid by the width of the paper (8.5″) and divided by the width of the poster-board (20″) giving a scaled grid of 1.7″ squares.  Now you can begin drawing in pencil the scaled design on the poster-board. It took me awhile to draw the design as I’m not a  great hand artist, but it turned out decent with the help of the grid. After I was finished with the drawing, I colored in the art with the Painters markers.
A few things I learned along the way was I should have erased the lines as I went along. It made for a bunch of work at the end.  I also should have filled in the yellow section with a darker color. The yellow didn’t seem to fill in as well as the darker colors. And my last regret was that I didn’t grid the poster-board even more tightly. The ‘but now it’s time to relax’ line is crooked and drives me crazy!
